Loose Bowls can weak connections form a strong structure? what are the origins and limits of regularity? can fewer options result in more freedom? this bowl is designed as a smooth surface simple bowl shape. the texture and woven like structure are the result of pushing 3D printer settings to extreme limits of looseness, weakness, porousness, and slowness. for example, the scalloped texture of the bowl wall is not present in the original 3D digital model. instead, the texture emerges from tiny, almost undetectable vibrations from the movement of the 3D printer as it slowly extrudes a single continuous strand of molten plastic in a repetitive circle. allowing each layer of plastic to lightly drape over each previous layer from a precise distance opens just enough of an opportunity for the printer's vibrations to effect the plastic just before it cools. the effect of the vibrations is imperceptible at first, but is amplified through each successive layer, eventually forming the porous, scalloped bowl wall. the scalloping is unique to each bowl and varies greatly depending on the color of plastic as well as other factors including viscosity, heat absorption, moisture retention, room temperature, and even local weather conditions. https://static1.squarespace.com/static/5cb83163c2ff613494dda5b7/t/5cc7b6e8c830251f28cdbc01/1556592360610/ X-LAB - L. A. F. U. E. L. situated at the western edge of the University of Southern California campus, the Future Energy Laboratory (F.U.E.L.) Museum is proposed to be the latest addition to Los Angeles’ Exposition Park. the 130,000 SF building will showcase examples of three major categories in energy technology: the history of energy; the current state of available technology; and the future of energy technology. the building reveals itself as an example of how innovation regarding energy consumption can be integrated into a thoughtful design, rather than merely housing exhibits. the exterior mesh panels multitask as shading devices, water collectors and air intakes. the translucent fabric panel system allows the interior gallery spaces to be brightly naturally lit through windows that receive almost no direct sunlight. the scoop-shaped intakes catch and accelerate air passing around and up the sides of the building further helping to cool and ventilate the interior all without the use of mechanical systems that require additional energy. https://static1.squarespace.com/static/5cb83163c2ff613494dda5b7/t/5cc7ae83971a182186a11be2/1556590211152/ ARCHITECTURE - LApartments residential. a client named Dr. L asked us to design an income property at first. we soon discovered she had something much more interesting in mind. she wanted to experiment. however, she was not attempting to mislead us.
